  • April 26 - Arrive Bordeaux, transfer to Monpazier

    Welcome to Bordeaux! As you arrive, you'll be greeted by our friendly group leaders, Hilary and Chuck, who will be your guides and companions throughout this exciting adventure.

    After meeting our group leaders, you'll embark on a picturesque transfer to the enchanting village of Monpazier. Nestled in the beautiful countryside of southwestern France, Monpazier is a bastide town known for its medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and quaint charm.

    As you make your way to Monpazier, you'll have the opportunity to soak in the stunning landscapes of the French countryside, dotted with vineyards, rolling hills, and historic landmarks.

    The Edward 1er Hotel will be our hotel for the week in Monpazier. It is located in the heart of the village and offers a magnificent view of the Dordogne hills.

  • April 27 - Monpazier, hike to Château de Biron

    Setting off from our starting point, we'll traverse through picturesque trails and winding pathways, each step bringing us closer to the imposing silhouette of Château de Biron. As we hike, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside, with lush forests, rolling hills, and panoramic vistas unfolding before your eyes.

    The hike to Château de Biron offers flexibility, catering to varying preferences and energy levels. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll or craving a more challenging trek, you'll have the freedom to customize your hiking experience. With distances ranging between six and twelve miles, you can tailor the journey to suit your desires and fitness level, ensuring an enjoyable adventure for all.

    Upon reaching Château de Biron, we'll pause to savor a delightful picnic amidst the tranquil ambiance of this historic landmark. As you indulge in delicious fare surrounded by the castle's timeless beauty, you'll feel truly immersed in the essence of French countryside living.

    Following our picnic, get ready to delve into the rich history and architectural splendor of Château de Bironi. Step back in time as you explore the castle's impressive ramparts, elegant chambers, and fascinating exhibits, each offering insights into centuries of noble heritage and cultural significance.

  • April 28 - La Cave to Rocamadour

    This morning, we will set off through time and nature on the La Cave to Rocamadour hike, which spans 9 miles. This scenic trek promises a blend of rugged landscapes, tranquil river valleys, dramatic gorges, and the enchanting allure of fortified medieval towns.

    Beginning at La Cave, adventurers are greeted by the whispering melodies of the surrounding forests as they wind along the meandering path. The trail gradually unfolds, revealing panoramic vistas of verdant valleys with quaint villages nestled against ancient limestone cliffs.

    As hikers delve deeper into the heart of the terrain, they traverse alongside babbling streams and cascading waterfalls, their murmurs echoing through the lush wilderness. The landscape's rugged beauty is punctuated by dramatic limestone formations, sculpted over centuries by the erosive forces of nature, casting a spellbinding aura.

  • April 29 - Le Bugue to Les Eyzies

    Embark on an unforgettable expedition through the picturesque landscapes of Le Bugue to Les Eyzies, spanning 8 miles of natural splendor and ancient wonders. This captivating hike promises a harmonious blend of breathtaking scenery and immersive historical exploration. We hope to visit the renowned Font de Gaume prehistoric cave in the heart of Les Eyzies.

    Setting off from Le Bugue, adventurers are immediately enveloped in the tranquility of nature's embrace as verdant forests and meandering streams beckon to be explored. The trail winds through rolling hills and lush valleys, offering panoramic vistas of the Dordogne River, weaving its winding path through the landscape.

    As hikers traverse the terrain, they are treated to a symphony of natural wonders, from the musical chorus of birdsong to the fragrant perfume of wildflowers carpeting the meadows. Hidden gems reveal themselves along the way, from secluded waterfalls cascading into crystal-clear pools to ancient rock formations etched over time.

  • April 30 - Beynac and La Roque-Gageac

    Today, we will walk through the heart of medieval France with the Beynac and La Roque-Gageac hike, a scenic exploration spanning 6-8 miles. This enchanting trek offers shorter but no less spectacular trails, providing panoramic views of fortified medieval towns, majestic castles, and the timeless beauty of the Dordogne River.

    Beginning in the historic village of Beynac, travelers are immediately immersed in the allure of centuries past. Cobblestone streets wind through the picturesque town, flanked by stone houses adorned with vibrant flowers. At the same time, the imposing silhouette of Beynac Castle stands sentinel atop a sheer limestone cliff, commanding the surrounding landscape.

    As the trail unfolds, adventurers are treated to breathtaking vistas at every turn, sweeping panoramas of the Dordogne River Valley stretching out before them. The tranquil waters of the river meander lazily through the verdant countryside, reflecting the azure sky above and the ancient stone fortifications that line its banks.

    The hike leads to the charming village of La Roque-Gageac, nestled snugly against the towering cliffs that rise abruptly from the river's edge. Here, we can wander along narrow alleys lined with golden-hued houses, their terracotta roofs gleaming in the sunlight, or explore the winding pathways that lead to hidden gardens and secluded viewpoints.

  • May 1 - Castelnaud, Chateau Milandes, and Domme

    This scenic route invites exploration of well-preserved towns, ancient abbeys, formidable fortifications, and a visit to the iconic chateau home of the legendary Josephine Baker.

    The walk begins in the charming village of Castelnaud, where cobbled streets wind through a tapestry of medieval architecture. Dominating the skyline is the imposing Castelnaud Castle, a majestic fortress perched atop a rugged cliff, offering panoramic views of the meandering Dordogne River below.

    As travelers traverse the trail, they are immersed in the timeless beauty of the landscape, with verdant valleys and rolling hillsides stretching as far as the eye can see. Along the way, well-preserved towns and villages dot the countryside, their ancient stone buildings steeped in centuries of history and tradition.

    The route leads to the exquisite Chateau Milandes, once the beloved home of the iconic entertainer Josephine Baker. Here, visitors can explore the elegant grounds and gardens, marvel at the opulent interior, and learn about the fascinating life and legacy of this trailblazing artist and activist.

    Continuing, the walk meanders through picturesque countryside and tranquil woodlands, offering glimpses of hidden abbeys and secluded chapels nestled amidst the natural splendor. Eventually, the trail leads to the fortified hilltop town of Domme, where panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside unfold from its commanding perch.

  • May 2 - Cadouin and Belves

    Begin your day with a delightful morning exploration of Cadouin and Belvès, two picturesque gems nestled near the enchanting village of Monpazier. As the sun rises over the idyllic countryside, embark on a leisurely AM walk through these charming locales, soaking in their rich history, architectural marvels, and quaint village life.

    Start your journey in Cadouin, where the majestic Cadouin Abbey awaits. Its ancient stone walls are steeped in centuries of spiritual significance and architectural splendor. Wander through the peaceful cloisters adorned with intricate carvings and lush greenery and marvel at the timeless beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

    From Cadouin, venture to the nearby village of Belvès, renowned for its stunning medieval architecture and panoramic vistas. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets and winding alleyways, where centuries-old stone houses stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Climb to the top of the Belvès bell tower for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, dotted with vineyards, orchards, and rolling hills.

  • May 3 - Arcachon and Cap Ferrett, Return to Bordeaux

    Embark on an unforgettable adventure along the picturesque shores of Arcachon and Cap Ferret, where sun, sea, and sand converge to create a paradise unlike any other. This tour promises a day of exploration, relaxation, and culinary delights amidst the natural splendor of the Atlantic coast.

    Begin your journey in the vibrant seaside town of Arcachon, where charming Belle Époque architecture and colorful beachfront promenades set the stage for a day of coastal bliss. Dive into the azure waters of the Atlantic at one of Arcachon's pristine beaches, or take a stroll along the bustling esplanade, soaking in panoramic views of the sparkling sea and bustling harbor.

    Next, venture across the bay to the enchanting peninsula of Cap Ferret, a serene oasis of dunes, pine forests, and a pristine coastline. Feel the soft grains of sand between your toes as you explore the windswept beaches and hidden coves that dot the shoreline, each offering its unique blend of tranquility and natural beauty.

    As the sun sets on your enchanting exploration of Arcachon and Cap Ferret, it's time to bid farewell to the coastal paradise and return to Bordeaux. With hearts full of cherished memories and spirits rejuvenated by the beauty of the Atlantic coast, your return journey promises to be a peaceful conclusion to an unforgettable tour.

    Our final night will be at Ibis Styles near the Bordeaux Airport for easy departures. The airport is a 2-minute tram ride away.

    Today marks the farewell to our group of travelers. Please arrange to schedule your departure flight from Bordeaux for your journey back home.

Our elegant little Château is furnished with taste and harmony. Some rooms have a panoramic view of the Périgourdine hills; others overlook the medieval town of Monpazier.

The Hotel Edward 1er has 17 rooms (11 doubles & 6 twins). The hotel is entirely non-smoking. All rooms have free WIFI connection, air conditioning, a mini bar, flat screen/satellite TV, safe, direct dial telephone, and hairdryer. Bottled water, a kettle, and an espresso machine are available. All rooms are furnished with warm colors and personal touches.
